Day 7
June 23 (Lewis and Clark State Park, IO)
Cassandra did everything: make breakfast, finish break down camp, get kids in the car, and drive to Lewis and Clark State Park in Onawa, IA. I finished packing while using Cassandra's wireless earbuds (which I'd never used before), and that was interesting - I was so much more productive than I would have been otherwise! We drove through rolling Iowa hills and farmland and lots of windmills: "The land of opportunity" according to the welcome sign. This place seems so interesting with an eye toward both the future and the past. We saw RVs, campers, and trailers everywhere on this drive - we entered a part of the country where campers are so much more common; we became accustomed to identifying and naming them all over until we arrived back east. Evelyn and Tilda were amazing in the car for seven hours, stopping only twice and having fun in the car all along the way. They love the Playaways we borrowed from the library - audiobooks for kids. It kept them contented and interested. Nonetheless, it was a long drive and we were all beat on the other side of it. Cassandra also backed the camper into our spot, which was triumphant! She was so proud of herself, and should be!
This campground rains "fairy dust" from the cottonwood trees that didn't stop falling the entire time we were there. It felt like magic.
This is the first location that is designed around RV and we felt like we were in an RV park - there was not another tent in sight! Our campsite overlooks Blue Lake, just east of the Missouri River - it is so calm and peaceful.
There is also an awesome, expansive playground in this campground where the children spent the rest of the evening, and we all had hot, refreshing showers at night. We hadn't showered since Punderson and certainly needed to. The evening was cooler than we'd had in a few days, and which made sleeping so much easier. We saw all kinds of birds here already: hummingbirds, orioles, blackbird, two kinds of woodpeckers, herons, and a stork! We are excited (and pleasantly surprised at that!) for our next few days here!
